Misadventure 03:44
It's a bitter disappointment And I know you're sad The endless torment A masterclass Horror anointed Nature's trap I know you're shaken Tell me in wrong The expectation For it all to go bad Your misfortune Was it part of the plan? To the bereaved… I'll see in your dreams When you curse the machine I'll intervene Invisible hand Invite it to leave Whenever you please To the bereaved…. A bitter disappointment Left inside The endless torment Welcome back I’ve been appointed to walk it all Out the door To the bereaved It's an act of nature in the natural world Not an act of hatred from the fatherhood It's a cruel roundabout Misadventure spit you out the other end

The Pest 04:14
Pink slips and parting gifts, accolades to go shopping with On the race track with options stacked, Rocket skates and a hall pass Why the long face sad sack We'll make an escape at last Why the long face sad sack It's time to make tracks See you in the hatch Out the back On a broom stick, when it's time to split Across the sky with a magic trick In my nap sack, compass and maps Jumpsuit pressed and packed Book of matches stashed Take a stab, but let's work fast So please just leave if you got better things to do than pester me I plead, in utter disbelief, please just leave It's obscene, if you've got better things to do than pester me Hard facts from the wise old sage, signed to law by the magistrate When the last laugh jumps off the page, they'll pay us back in spades Tit for tat for days, done with grace This game of cat and mouse is a perpetual war So please just leave if you got better things to do than pester me I plead, in utter disbelief, please just leave It's obscene, you've got better things to do than pester me When we flee from the menagerie, in the cover of night when the guard's asleep We'll beat feet, but be discrete walking out his majesty Come ancient history I’ll look back and there you’ll be, believe Caught and then released and let me be This game of cat and mouse is perpetual war So please just leave if you got better things to do than pester me I plead, in utter disbelief, please just leave It's obscene, you've got better things to do than pester me

Zirconia 03:08
Blown off the map too early You're out of this world You're not invited back you’re not coming It's too late to return When you’re out of this world Now you’ve done it Don't ask if you don't have the stomach You're looking for it The joke’s crass for my loving when You didn’t build it to burn When you’re out of this world Now you’ve done it We didn't build to burn Your wisdom comes in pearls Wisdom comes in pearls

The king of cold comfort, friend Your constant companion Will cancel all your plans For the crisis out of hand Undercover, friend Invisible hand Will lay the facts bare Your best laid plans A force of nature, friend Read in the papers Jump off the page A statement made plain The king of cold comfort But time is on my side If the bell don’t ring You can spread your wings Get carried by the wind and say goodbye To the king of cold comfort It's no wonder, friend Invincible man Stakes a claim again To your best laid plans Trace it backwards, friend We'll give you a hand We’re all concerned Bridges have been burned It's cold comfort But time is on my side If the bell don’t ring You can spread your wings Get carried by the wind and say goodbye Truth is in the jest buts its best you don't know Phoney friends will tell you, but it don’t hit home If it only rolled off the silver tongue, it wouldn't take much to play along Fools they Need sugar on the spoon to Sip their medicine If it only rolled off the silver tongue, it wouldn't take much to play along If it only tasted on the tongue, it wouldn't take much to drink it all

High hopes for a delicate robe Silk I covet the most Cut the tags turn me to stone Trade my rags for brand new clothes Got your war and peace Adorned in clean fatigues Lease me a flock of sheep Shaved for a basket of fleece Work it to a piece of string Yarn for pockets and sleeves Got your war and peace Adorned in clean fatigues Stitch me brand new seams Put the needle in the big machine Built to last more than a week Wrapped in a cotton weave Got your war and peace Adorned in clean fatigues It isn’t hard to beat hard times Adorned in clean fatigues Step into the light On track with creases in my slacks Coat tails hang off the back Tie together with buttons snapped Stand with my shoulders back Got your war and peace Adorned in clean fatigues It isn’t hard to beat hard times Adorned in clean fatigues Step into the light

Teddy comes alive In the nick of time Doesn’t think twice, he can Walk into it blind Doesn’t do the math But Teddy’s got the facts Add it all together and Nothing left to subtract Oh please, I don’t need What you won’t do to me Tried to lay a trap But Teddy beat the rap Try to do him dirty Threw the dirty right back Always come in last Until the final act Tie it all together Untethered in tact Teddy… Oh please, I don’t need What you won’t do to me

Bloody Luck 02:59
You better make your move if you don't choose what to do They'll look at you and they'll assume They got all the bloody luck Walking out with all the free stuff Filling both their pockets up With all their bloody luck Don’t be confused The hot shots make the rules up

Forsythia 03:24
Forsythia they clipped your wings, When you turned your back and refused to sing Left inside on a rainy day, we made big plans but it felt too staged Celebrate, celebrate Laying on your back when the band starts to play Celebrate, celebrate Then you start to laugh when your friends walk away Past due and growing old, standing by for the miracle Little work for the young apprentice, boots tied tight and getting restless Celebrate, celebrate Laying on your back when the band starts to play Celebrate, celebrate Then you start to laugh when your friends walk away I want my turn to return the favour You kept me safe when faces were strange I'm not leaving until I get an answer Did I cross your mind when you stayed brave? Hanging from the window sill, found alive with time to kill Slurred speech with plenty to say, sudden death get carried away Celebrate, celebrate Laying on your back when the band starts to play Celebrate, celebrate Then you start to laugh when your friends walk away Past due and growing old, standing by for the miracle Little work for the young apprentice, boots tied tight and getting restless Celebrate, celebrate Laying on your back when the band starts to play Celebrate, celebrate Then you start to laugh when your friends walk away I want my turn to return the favour You kept me safe when faces were strange I'm not leaving until I get an answer Did I cross your mind when you stayed brave?

Come on cut me loose Our only one shot at a deal I’m about to lose When I come charging onto the field Oh you caught it bad Oh it caught you on the move A penny for a pound… Try to set the time, find it laying around Changes with the tide when the lights go down Glide along the rails of your own two feet Get a plan that's real and you'll Make your escape, And soon you'll be on the move I’m about to lose When I come charging onto the field Come on cut me loose Our only one shot at a deal Oh you caught it bad Oh it caught you on the move A penny for a pound… Come on cut me loose A penny for a pound…

Back to work on my masterpiece Sweep right in like the springtime breeze Wait till you meet the best of me It’s obscene Try to survive my best intentions I get by without second guesses On my first try, without any lessons, see I'm back on the team Pay me no mind, lower your defenses to crimes, Everything is fine, here comes my redemption on time Help me count my many blessings Rounding out for what I'm forgetting Never mind, ask no questions, believe, I'm back on the team

Nothing ever grows, in flushing meadows Seated row by row, lobbing insults Terror in tow, temperamental Everybody knows, its how the wind blows Sunset on your ad side Wrong foot caught you left behind Cross court from a good sport blind spot sent you back in time Nothing ever grows, in flushing meadows Everybody knows, its how the wind blows Tossed back on the ad side Wrong foot left behind Ball bashed with all the panache Of your dumb klutz flying blind I'll fight you all the way to make it through I'll bash your brains if I have to

Dug a grave like he sensed it Dug a grave like he didn't have the time Dug a grave like he meant it Dug a grave like he saw it around the bend Tried my best to protect him Tried my best but I didn't have the time Feathered nest resurrect him Tried my best the but it turned on a dime It doesn't seem much When it turns on a dime Cheat the pattern King in a casket When it all turns bad Wretched and tragic

about

"Washing Machine makes post-punk with purpose. On their second album, Cheat The Pattern, the Kjipuktuk / Halifax trio channel the rough and tumble attitudes of politically-charged bands from late ’70s Britain, while delivering their songs with the stylish precision of ’80s new wave. Founding frontman Noel Macdonald is joined by Booji Boys drummer Justin Crowe and bassist Glen Leck, a producer and graphic designer who created the album’s striking cover art.

Rather than subjecting themselves to extensive rehearsals, Washing Machine streamlined the typical process of recording. During a series of sessions in Leck’s basement, Macdonald ran through songs with his rhythm section only two or three times before hitting the record button, trusting their abilities of spontaneous interpretation. The rest of the overdubs were completed as Macdonald mixed the album in his home, striving to emulate his large-looming inspirations.

“I wanted to make us sound like the albums from the ’80s that I love,” Macdonald concludes. “The problem is that they sound incredible because they’re so well recorded. You can’t really make an album like Songs From The Big Chair on a bedroom budget, but that’s always the yardstick.”'
